About Nuit Blanche

Nuit Blanche is a contemporary arts and culture festival filled with music, performances and various art installations. The festival runs from dusk till dawn, set in the heart of Paris during the first Saturday of October. For this project I was challenged with creating a bilingual, cohesive visual identity for Nuit Blanche Paris 2022 including a festival poster, event e-tickets, and a program. My goal was to develop a system which compels the millennial age group who have an active lifestyle and a relaxed mindset to come and experience Paris’ art and culture scene while exploring the rich nightlife. My concept revolves around embodying this idea of a glamorous “sleepless night” through a primary typographic approach. Using bright colours over a dark backdrop, the imagery I create will reflect the bright lights of the city’s nightlife.

Poster & E-Tickets

Starting off with the poster, I utilized the type to reflect the installations found throughout Paris during Nuit Blanche. The blocky 3D effect of the type resembles the differing structures and contemporary pieces installed within the open spaces. The bright neon colours reflect the use of LED lighting throughout the exhibitions and events of the city contrasting with the dark background representing the night sky. The fading effect is used to express the popular use of digital projections within many of the art works and performances. Using a connotative approach paired with a type as image method of communication, the emotions and enchanting vibes of the festival can be reflected in a simple design. The E-tickets system uses a dash line stroke as seen in the event names or a divider line symbol as seen in the event information to divide and pair the English and French. I follow the same colour coding system across the program and my ticket events for easy referencing.

Festival Program Design

Throughout my program I use large bleeding images to showcase the festival’s installations and performances, providing more context of the festival for the viewer. The event headings are colour coded by type of event using the same colour palette as the poster and e-tickets. I decided to create a spread that contains two fold out pages for the map and schedule. When it's opened up we can see how the colour coding from the events pages are reused on both the map and the schedule.
