AI-Assisted Storytelling Designed for Maladaptive Daydreamers

Overview

Maladaptive Daydreaming can be defined as a condition where a person spends an excessive amount of time daydreaming, often becoming so immersed in their inner fantasies that they are unable to complete their daily tasks. This research and design thesis explores the relationship between maladaptive daydreaming and music consumption. Over the course of 12 weeks, secondary research was conducted around what maladaptive daydreaming consists of, the role that music consumption plays in enhancing the behaviour, and its short and long-term repercussions. Repercussions include an irresistible yearning for more daydreaming, developing guilt around lost time, opportunities, and relationships, and the dullness of real life in contrast to one’s fantasies. In efforts to address these repercussions, my goal was to transform these drawbacks into a positive and creative outlet for these individuals. I propose Somer, an AI-assisted storytelling platform designed to transform creative ideas into short stories. To address the isolating nature of the behaviour, the platform features a social component of sharing and interacting with other users’ stories.

The app utilizes AI capabilities to explore how emerging technologies can be adopted in unique ways and create opportunities on extending creative ideas. Once a story is created, there is lots of flexibility in furthering utilizing AI to make adjustments in the content and the appearance of the story before a user publishes it to the public feed.
